Team of the Year: Here, vote for the team that you feel is most likely to capture the CAL Cup in 2004. Rather than compiling a list of my personal favourites, I'll leave all teams in the running for this award.
Non-Player of the Year: Who has made the biggest impact on the court without actually being on the court? Here are the season's nominees:
Lawrence Blohm: Toting a whistle and an undersized referee's jersey, Blohm has been reaking havoc on the league since day one. Braving numerous bouts with wintry mix, Blohm has attended damn near every week of play without question. He's a trooper and certainly a leading candidate for this award.
' Vinnie Mac ': The traditionally raucus fan has traded in his disses for a clipboard and note-book this year. As the unofficial 'coach' of the Pistons, Vincent can be dubbed partially responsible for the near flawless record that the Pistons have compiled thusfar. Being touted as 'the next Phil Jackson,' Mac continues to wow crowds with his fashion sense & coaching prowess.
Jaison Udani: After unofficially hanging up the K-Swisses soon after game one, Udani is responsible for one of the biggest declines in CAL history: decline of the Nuggets, the. After drafting an urban all-star team, Udani's Nuggets have compiled an absolutely dismal 1-5 record. The question remains: when will Udani revert to his 'Ukraine Train' days and become a player yet again?
Haircut of the Year: This award will be handed out to the member of the league honing the league's worst haircut.
Jeff Blomdahl: Mop meets Cory Matthews.
John Snyder: 8th grade called. .
Lawrence Blohm: 'Straight thinnin', yo.'
Chris Canderan: Bic, the.
Payne Ortleib: Blonde Bombshell
Write in vote here:
Rookie of the Year: Given to the best first season CAL Player in the league.
Kennan McPeak-newcomer is averaging 10 points a game on a very good Nets squad
Zach Breitinger-has only played 3 games but has been a force on the court and is the reason for the Suns winning streak
Carlos Morales-rebounding machine from the Sixers who had a breakout game week 2 with 20 pts and 15 rbs
Write In Vote:
Upset of the Year:Goes to the team with the most shocking win of the season (final nominees will be announced after week 9)
Sixers vs Bulls-a week 1 matchup that everyone had the Bulls winning, the Sixers led by Phil Schaffer had a tremendous upset over the tandem of Mike Hinsley, Lionel Johnson, Alex Ianone, and Dan Bonato
Bulls vs Pistons-a suprising upset from Week 6, the Bulls were 0-5 while the Pistons were 5-0 and in first place. Granted the Pistons were missig 4 key players, it was still a shocking turn of events
Kings vs Nets-a game from Week 5, the Nets saw their 2 game winning streak halted by the 1-3 Kings. Bill Stutzman had a double-double while the Nets suffered 4 technical fouls including two on guard Kyle Evans
Worst Play of the Year:
Paul Friol: Late in second half of the Nuggets vs Nets game Jason Dugan pulled down an offensive rebound after a missed foul shot. Paul Friol on the opposing team ripped the ball away from Dugan and continued to attempt a lay up. Little did he know that he was shooting on the wrong basket. What makes this even more pathetic is that seconds before Friol saw the opposing team shoot a foul shot on the same basket.
Dan Jones aka Bones: In the first half of the Bulls vs Kings game Dan Jones ripped down an offensive rebound. The only problem was that Jones thought it was a defensive rebound. Jones with excitement saw his chance to finally dunk. He dribbled down the court towards the opposing team's basket. Jones had no clue that he was about to commit a back court violation. As Jones crossed half court the whole CAL Dome errupted with laughter even the referee.
Chris Jones: Chris Jones made CAL history in week 7 by becoming the only person to hit the CAL Dome ceiling with a pass. Chris Jones pulled down a defensive rebound and out the corner of his eye saw his brother on the other side of the court all alone. Dan, Chris's brother, started waving his hands for the ball. Dan once again saw another oppertunity to dunk but little did he know that his own brother would crush his dream of dunking. Chris continued to launch the ball down court but for some unknown reason he threw it upwards and his passed clanked off the ceiling. Bulls captian Alex Iannone was again left in shock by yet another charade by the Jones brothers.
Kevin Thomas: The sixers were down 3 with 3 seconds left when Kevin Thomas was inbounding the ball. Kevin saw someone open down court so he pull the ball back and launch it down court but it hit the rafters. It was called out-of-bounds to the other team and the sixers lost. This game was very important for the sixers positioning in the playofffs
Most Improved Player
Rob Milburn-after 2 stints with the Nuggets, Milburn has gone from a 6 ppg spot shooter, to the leading scorer of the Kings. He has escaped the curse of the Nuggets
Dan Jones-even after last week's antics, "The Revolva" has become a league favorite with his highlight reel dunks and his stunning physique. He has become one of the top defenders in the league
Mike Ziegler-after playing sparingly for the Nuggets, Ziegler has become the T'Wolves leading rebounder and their top defender.
